What is a School Psychologist?

School Psychologists are members of school teams that help support both students and staff within the school setting. School Psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to create a safe, healthy and supportive learning environment that strengthens connections between school, home, and the community. School Psychologists also use expertise in mental health, learning, and behavior, to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally, and emotionally.

During a typical day at school, a School Psychologist can be found observing students in and outside the classroom, doing crisis prevention and intervention work, collaborating with teachers, working with students individually or in groups, or giving social emotional or cognitive assessments to students to determine eligibility for Special Education. We like to think of ourselves as a jack of all trades!
